Pepe denied by referee

Pepe was controversially excluded in the semi-final of the David Meldrum Testimonial Meeting for allegedly taking fellow Czech and team mate Michael Makovsky out in the first corner. Many were expecting a 'first bend bunching' type decision from referee as Makovsky went down, with all four back, but the red exclusion light was on and Pepe was out. This was a shame as Pepe was unbeaten and looked as if he could have gone on to win.

He had looked extremely sharp and competitive in his three qualifying rides, performing the first true overtake of the meeting when he flew past Michael Makovsky. What had been a fairly processional meeting was brought to life by this manuevere, inspiring others to try and follow suit. His other two qualifying rides were won from the gate and he proceded to the semis with a maximum. The only other rider to do similar was James Wright of Elite League fame.

So that was night over for Pepe who certainly looked on fire. Should he have been able to proceed to the final he would have certainly given the other riders a run for the money as a £1000 cheque was on offer for the winner  (Ritchie Hawkins).
